Geelong declared winner at Under 18 Winter Championship

With the weather closing in on Sunday morning, Geelong broke clear of Latrobe Valley with four in the second of a rain-shortened Winter Championship contest that was called with the score at 5-2.

James Lappin conceded a solitary hit over the two innings completed, while Nicholas Zanghi (two hits and an RBI) and Will Brennan (RBI) made the most of their trips to the plate for a Geelong offence that showed excellent pitch selection in drawing six walks.

Heavy rain caused disruption of the Round Robin schedule and Geelong was slated to meet Dandenong to decide the championship. However, with weather and ground conditions not deemed acceptable under just six minutes of play, the undefeated GBA team was declared winner of the tournament. Congratulations to all involved - players, coaching staff, officials, parents and supporters!

DAY TWO RESULTS:

GEELONG 5 defeated LATROBE VALLEY 2

RINGWOOD 4 defeated SUNRAYSIA 0

GBA undefeated after Day One.

Geelong began its tournament in imperious fashion, belting six in the second to set the base for a thumping 17-2 result over Sunraysia.

Heading an outstanding team performance, Cooper Rickard tossed 2.2 innings of quality work before handing the ball to Sebastian Dew to close out the game. With four of his side’s RBIs, Rickard was a standout with the bat along with Brody Stokoe (four ribbies), Josh Byrne (two walks and two RBIs) and James Lappin, who picked three walks.

Continuing in the same vein against Ringwood, Geelong scored in all four innings played, taking full toll of a surfeit of Ringwood errors to emerge a 10-0 winner.

Travis Duxson (three innings) dominated on the hill for Geelong, which played faultless defence and held Ringwood hitless, while Josh Byrne (hit and two RBIs) was again a leader in offence along with Will Brennan and Cooper Rickard.

Geelong will face Latrobe Valley and Dandenong on Sunday, with first and second-placed teams to then play off for the championship.
