Allies finish second at Championship (Mildura, 21 and 22 July)

After enjoying a brilliant Day One, winning all three of its games - the Allies posted a win and a loss on Sunday morning before coming up against a tough Ringwood side in the afternoon final. Great effort by team organisers and players for acquitting themselves so very well!

"The Allies had to settle for runners-up in the Under 14 Carnival," Head Coach Chris Rickard reported.

"It was a great effort by the Allies to reach the Grand Final today, winning the last of our pool games in a tight battle with City-West after Sunraysia defeated us in the morning game," he said. "In the end Ringwood was just too strong, but I am really happy to say that the GBA players all did a great job. Most of them have come out of our Under 12 club games and were playing in their first winter championship."

"It was a different experience managing kids from different leagues in the same time, but the players and their supporters all came together really well. It was a fun weekend, and to win four games from six was a credit to everyone."

Harrison Fitzgerald, from Bendigo, was selected as All-Star for the Allies team.

Comprised of players from Bendigo, Ringwood and Geelong, the “Allies” team combined wonderfully well on the first day of the tournament, posting a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Ringwood before overpowering Latrobe Valley 15-2 and prevailing 5-1 against a squad representing the ever-competitive Diamond Valley.

Taking on the role of Head Coach after the late withdrawal of Lee Harty with pressing work commitments, Chris Rickard and Assistant Brian Fitzgerald from the Bendigo Baseball Association were delighted with how the composite team had come together for the tournament.

“Our pitching was terrific today,” Chris Rickard said. “Our defence was really good in backing up our pitchers and all of our hitters did a great job of putting the ball in play and placing pressure on the opposition.”

“Playing conditions up here were just great for the first day,” he said. “A bit chilly in the morning, but it turned into a beautiful day. And the facilities - as always up here - were first class.”

The Allies will face Sunraysia and City West on Sunday morning, with a win in either of those games guaranteeing first or second placing for playoffs in the afternoon.
