Under 12 Winter Championship: Mildura 28/29 July
The Geelong Baseball Association bats really came alive on Day Two of the tournament, scoring in every innings of the early morning game before being edged out 15-11 by Dandenong at the end. Cade White and Josh Hirst did a solid job on the hill for the GBA, which picked nine walks and had two HPBs to be a scoring threat throughout. With two doubles, Xavier Galang was a standout in a real team performance to lead the way along with Marshall McMahon and Lachlan Hodge.
For Game Two, this time against a strong Ringwood/Diamond Valley outfit, Geelong again scored regularly in backing up its pitching trio of Sid Grimmer, Freya Arnott and Luke Morrow before the eastern suburbs combination gained a late break and posted a 15-9 result. Lachlan Hodge was again among the hitting action, along with Freya Arnott, Albie Scott and Cade White – who showed great pitch selection to collect two walks apiece.
Meeting Sunraysia in its last game of the tournament, and still in search of a win, Geelong produced its best form of the weekend to gain an early break and lead the local team, which edged back in front and held a two-run break into the top of the last. Although Geelong rallied for one run, Sunraysia was able to hold on for a thrilling 12-11 result in what was probably the best game of the weekend - and a credit to both squads. Freya Arnott and Cade White both swatted doubles, while Reid Sexton and Sid Grimmer both hit safely in key situations for a Geelong side that had improved noticeably over an arduous six-game series.
Geelong Baseball Association Board, its member clubs and supporters extend their congratulations to the management staff and to players for representing the league with honour and distinction. Although winning is a pleasant bonus at this level of baseball, what is far more important is the engagement of kids and their parents, the learning of new skills, the socialising and the forming of friendships in the context of a great team sport. Well done, all!
The worth of under-aged baseball tournaments such as these was beautifully summed up in a Facebook post by Emily Galang, who said:
“Best experience. The team that played yesterday morning is a different team to the one that played the last game today. Two days of six games with little rest in between but all these kids can’t wipe the smiles off their faces. Thanks to all the staff and crew.”

Again played in superb conditions – for Day One at least – the Under 12 Championship in Mildura was dominated by home side Sunraysia, which won all three of its games.
Putting up brave performances in all three of its outings against the stronger Pool A Teams, Geelong gave up more walks than it would have liked in losses to Sunraysia, Dandenong and Ringwood/Diamond Valley – although staff would be have been very pleased with the team's great enthusiasm, a late comeback in Game Two and some great hitting by Marshall McMahon and Cade White in Game One.
The tournament will continue on Sunday, with return matches against the same teams.
