Bears do enough in the wet: Lara sinks Guild

Heavy and persistent rainfall across the region wrought havoc with the baseball schedule, resulting in a number of washouts across the league – notably at Deakin University, where a much-anticipated A Grade clash between the Blues and Ballarat Royals was called for adverse conditions.

Saints and Bellarine relocated to Pioneer Park outer ground, where the Bears posted a 2-0 win in a rain-shortened contest decided on a defensive error, while Lara Wildcats celebrated the return of a couple of their stars with an 11-6 result over Guild.

Bleak in our neck of the woods, the weather proved far more salubrious in Morwell, where the GBA squad enjoyed a successful Day One of the Baseball Victoria Under 14 Winter Championship – going undefeated through its three Saturday games.

DEAKIN versus ROYALS

Both A Grade and A Reserve games were washed out.

Deakin will be at home to Lara next Saturday, while the Royals will play host to Saints.

BELLARINE 2 defeated SAINTS 0

With their scheduled clash at Wallington called last week because of ground conditions, both clubs agreed on a reschedule of today's game to the Pioneer Park synthetic field, keen to get a result between league-leading clubs who have been in solid form of late.

Saints may have been having second thoughts after a ragged top of the first, though, when the Bears plated two on a defensive slip-up after Cody Anderson whiffed the first two hitters he saw.

In tough conditions for all – especially pitchers - Bellarine starter Josh Crotty walked a couple and conceded a pair of hits in the equaliser, although it amounted to naught as lead-off Trevor Elliott was caught stealing and Saints middle order was unable to convert with bases juiced and one out.

After the initial flurry there was precious little happening in offence for either side, with Anderson going unpunished for a couple of passes in the third and Crotty spinning a further three clean innings before persistent rain forced an early end to the contest.

Now well clear at the top of the table, Bellarine will be away team to an out of sorts Guild Lions next Saturday, while Saints trek up the highway to take on Ballarat Royals – who just might fancy their chances of challenging for second billing on an already compact A Grade table.

LARA 11 defeated GUILD 6

Coming home with a rush last week – when they forced an unlikely draw with Guild – the Wildcats would have had early concerns when the visitors generated a three-spot in the first against Lara toiler Chris Lewis, who just keeps toughing it out for his club.

The response was emphatic, however, as the Wildcats launched a full-on assault against wily Guild evergreen Duane Davenport, taking him for four in the bottom of the frame and three more in the second – enabled largely, it should be said, by the benevolent contribution of seven walks and a pair of HPBs.

Although the Lions chipped away at the lead with runs in the third, fourth and fifth, Lara effectively iced the contest with two more in the bottom of five before despatching Dan Anson to the mound to close out the game with a faultless late stint.

Out-hitting its opponent ten to eight, Guild had nine contributors - including Ben Jensz (two hits) and James Renouf (home run) - but it was outgunned by a Lara offence revelling in the return of Cameron Forbes (three hits and a lazy five ribbies), Mitch Miller (one and three) and Jarrod Fraim (one and two), who is enjoying an enormously productive season with the stick.

Now equal with Guild on win percentage and building after a sluggish several weeks, Lara will be away to Deakin next Saturday, while the Lions play host to Bellarine – which has already inflicted two losses on the reigning premier this season.
